After an extensive four-year renovation, which necessitated closing the museum for a year, the Amsterdam Maritime Museum reopened to the public in October 2011. The museum owns one of the largest maritime collections in the world and aims to show its visitors how the culture of the Netherlands was shaped by the sea. The museum is also widely used as a special meeting place.
