Helping an entire community switch to clean power
As recently as 2007, most of the 45 homes, 20 businesses and 6 community buildings on the Isle of Eigg were powered by polluting diesel generators. When the community decided to set up a company to take charge of switching to renewable energy, we were happy to help.
With grant funding and a loan, we provided Eigg Electric Limited with the working capital they needed to get this ambitious scheme off the ground – creating a grid to connect the Isle to renewable energy sources and installing solar panels, hydro energy and wind turbines. The project has been a huge success, and is one of 10 finalists for the National Endowment for Science, Technology and Arts (NESTA) Big Green Challenge. Now 95% of Eigg’s power comes from renewable sources.
