Microfinance institution HUMO in Tajikistan mainly focuses on providing credit to small businesses in rural areas. From their head office in the capital Dushanbe, HUMO’s loan officers visit the village communities (jamoats) in 15 surrounding districts. The poor infrastructure and the fragile agricultural climate (only 7% of the land is suitable for arable farming) are the biggest challenges for the development of an enterprise in the rural areas. To help diversify its portfolio, HUMO is also active in cities where it provides individual loans to businesses in the retail, manufacturing, and service sectors. Triodos Sustainable Finance Foundation has provided a loan to HUMO to realise a further growth.
