Fair trade (Social)
Established in 2003, Arasy is a family-owned sourcing, processing and trading company from Paraguay. The company trades sesame, cotton and chia (very nutritious seed), which it sources from around 35,000 small farmers. With a market share of 33% in sesame exports Arasy is leader in this segment; the sesame is primarily sold to European buyers.
The company employs a special team of agricultural engineers who support the organic farmers and who strictly follow up on organic practices.
The number of organic farmers and the amount of organically farmed land have been growing over the past few years. In addition, Arasy plays an important role in improving the living standard of many smallholder farmers in Paraguay.
Triodos Sustainable Trade Fund has provided trade finance to enable Arasy to pay the farmers directly upon delivery of their harvest.
KEY INDICATOR as of 31 December 2015:
- number of farmers: 19,227
- number of hectares: 8,520 hectares of sustainably
Smallholder farmers in developing countries do not necessarily reap the rewards of a complex international trade system. So, by financing fair trade enterprises we aim to make sure that individuals and their families are paid fairly for their products.
