Fair trade (Social)

Etico was set up in 2004 as an ethical trading company in the United Kingdom to provide sesame and coffee producing cooperatives in Nicaragua the opportunity to move up the value chain, namely to export their produce to international markets.

Via Etico their produce is stored in the United States and
supplied to small and medium-sized coffee roasters. The sesame cooperatives refine and deliver their sesame oil via Etico to the main buyer L’Oreal/Bodyshop. Furthermore, Etico sells an increasing part of the sesame production of the largest Nicaraguan sesame cooperative Del Campo to buyers in the UK and Japan.

Etico has a strong focus on organic production. It further assists cooperatives in improving their processing facilities and supports initiatives to increase productivity.

The trade finance from Triodos Sustainable Trade Fund has enabled Etico to pay the cooperatives upon delivery of their produce.

KEY INDICATORS as of 31 December 2015:
- number of farmers: 952
- number of hectares: 108 hectares of sustainably
cultivated land

Fair trade

Smallholder farmers in developing countries do not necessarily reap the rewards of a complex international trade system. So, by financing fair trade enterprises we aim to make sure that individuals and their families are paid fairly for their products.
