Triodos Bank - a sustainable bank since 1980

1968
Economist Adriaan Deking Dura, tax law professor Dieter BrĂ¼ll, management consultant Lex Bos and banker Rudolf Mees form a group to study how money can be managed sustainably.

1971
Triodos Foundation is established to use gifts and loans to support innovative projects and companies.

1980
Triodos Bank NV is established with EUR 540,000 in start-up share capital and a full banking licence from the Dutch Central Bank. It starts operating in the Netherlands.

1990
Triodos Bank launches the first green fund in Europe, Biogrond Beleggingsfonds. The Green Investment Fund follows later.

1993
Triodos Bank opens a branch in Belgium.

1994
Triodos Bank launches two foundations: Stichting Triodos-Doen opens for business in cooperation with Stichting DOEN; and Stichting Hivos-Triodos Fonds begins in cooperation with Hivos. Both funds invest in developing countries and are among the first in the world to invest in microfinance.

1995
Triodos Bank opens a branch in the United Kingdom. Triodos Renewables (formerly the Wind Fund) is established in the UK.

1997
Triodos launches the Added Value Fund, with Delta Lloyd Asset Management, and lists it on the Amsterdam stock exchange.

1998
Triodos Bank merges its three green funds to form the Triodos Green Fund. This listed fund is behind the success of the Groenregeling, a Dutch tax scheme for green projects.

2000
In the Netherlands, the Triodos Added Value Fund allows investors to choose between equity, bond and mixed funds.

2002
The Triodos Fair Share Fund is established in the Netherlands, offering private individuals and institutions the chance to invest in microfinance institutions in developing countries.

2004
Triodos Bank opens a branch in Spain. Triodos launches the Sustainable Real Estate Fund, the first real estate fund to invest exclusively in sustainable buildings.

2006
Triodos Bank opens its international headquarters in the Netherlands. Triodos launches its first Luxembourg based investment fund, Triodos Renewables Europe Fund, to invest in European renewable energy projects. In the Netherlands, Triodos Culture Fund starts operating.

2007
Triodos Bank launches the Triodos Values Pioneer Fund. This is part of a second Luxembourg fund and incorporates Triodos Values Equity Fund and Triodos Values Bond Fund.

2008
Triodos Bank launches the Triodos Sustainable Trade Fund. This provides trade finance to certified organic and fair trade producers in developing countries and emerging markets.

2009
Triodos Bank co-founded the Global Alliance for Banking on Values
The Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV) is an independent network of banks using finance to deliver sustainable economic, social and environmental development.

Triodos Bank opens a branch in Germany

Triodos Microfinance Fund is launched

This fund offers institutional investors, wealthier individuals and private banking clients across Europe the opportunity to invest in microfinance.

2011
The Sustainable Finance Lab (SFL) is established. The SFL is an initiative of Triodos Bank in the Netherlands together with the Utrecht University and the Utrecht Sustainability Institute (USI). The SFL is an informal interdisciplinary network of mostly academics of different Dutch universities. Its secretariat is located at the University of Utrecht School of Economics.

2013
Triodos Bank is taking its first steps in France. Establishing Triodos Finance B.V. with a mandate by Triodos Bank as an intermediary in banking operations representative office in Paris.

2014
Triodos Investment Management launches the Triodos Organic Growth Fund. This is a long-term evergreen fund, which will provide equity to leading organic food companies and sustainable consumer businesses across Europe.

2015
Triodos Investment Management launches the Triodos Multi Impact Fund. This first-ever Triodos 'fund-of-funds' invests in a broad array of sectors that stimulate the transition to a more sustainable society, such as sustainable trade, inclusive finance, renewable energy, arts & culture, and organic food and agriculture.

Triodos Bank becomes a certified B Corp member in April 2015 at the official launch of the B Corp movement in Europe. B Corps are a new type of company that use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.
