In this time of crisis, we see the power of connection. Let’s use it to transform our economy from one that focuses purely on profit and growth into one that supports the things that are important to us all, such as a healthy living environment and treating each other with compassion. Where companies balance the interests of investors, employees, society, and future generations, where we create an economy that works for the many and not just the few.

#2 Resilient

From bluff to buffers

Our current economic system is largely built on the single goal of maximising profit and growth. It encourages companies to build up debt and to look purely at the short term and the interests of shareholders. This makes the whole economy vulnerable, and the associated risks are passed on to society. The impact of this is felt hardest by the people who have the least, people with no or underpaid jobs, who have no security or resources. If we want to rebuild after the crisis, it is vital to invest in enough buffers. We must build a new economy that provides equal opportunities, and in which we pay a fair price for goods and services. A fair economy is a resilient economy.

#3 Low carbon

From grey to green

There is growing awareness of the climate crisis. However, the Covid-19 pandemic has partly halted the energy transition. Economic growth and the development of climate policy could and should be mutually reinforcing. This requires a government that supports sustainable companies and initiatives and imposes sustainable conditions on companies that ask for support and supports sustainable companies and initiatives itself. For instance, by taxing CO2 emissions.

Globalisation has brought us material prosperity and international cooperation remains urgently needed. But when it comes to food, the basis of our existence, we need to bring it closer to home. Because there is something fundamentally wrong with our global food system. For decades now, the main goal of our food systems has been to produce as much food as possible at the lowest possible price. The concentration and specialisation of unilateral agriculture and monocultures that are part of this system make us vulnerable. It affects nature’s ability to control germs and viruses, depletes soil, contributes to CO2 emissions, causes a decrease in biodiversity and supports inequality due to power concentration. Local agriculture and food production are needed. Local food can often mean lower CO2 emissions, and a shorter supply chain reduces the number of intermediaries taking a share of the profits, which can lead to a more robust and localised economy and food system.

#5 Shared values

From me to we

Taxpayers' money is community money. It belongs to all of us. We can put that money into restarting the old fossil economy, but it is bankrupt. Money must be invested in the economy of the future and in a society that is genuinely there for all. For the ‘we’ and less for the ‘me’. In this new economy, shared values and community interest get an extra push from governments. Businesses and (civic) initiatives that meet specific social needs, such as healthcare and sustainable food, can take advantage of this tailwind.
