Deutsche Telekom is one of the world’s leading telecommunications companies. It provides fixed-network, mobile communications, internet, and TV products and services to retail clients, and information and communication technology (ICT) solutions to business clients. The company operates mainly in Europe and the US and has around 242 million mobile customers, 27 million fixed-network lines, and 22 million broadband lines. It operates through several subsidiaries, of which the communication brand T-Mobile is most well-known.

The company was formed in 1995 following the privatisation of the formerly state-owned monopoly Deutsche Bundespost and has around 226,300 employees worldwide.

Investment rationale

Telecommunications technology enables people to connect with each other which is therefore key for inclusion and empowerment in this increasingly digital society. As a leading and global telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom’s core products enable connectivity through mobile phone and internet connections and fixed phone lines. The covid-19 pandemic has shown how essential good mobile phone and internet connections are, whether it be for working from home, home schooling, teleconferencing, e-commerce and staying in touch with each other.

Deutsche Telekom actively empowers customers by promoting media literacy with a wide range of projects and initiatives like workshops and training courses, thus enabling children, young people, and adults of all ages to deal competently and safely with new technologies. Deutsche Telekom is also well advanced in reducing its environmental footprint, using 100% of its electricity from renewable energy sources and aiming for net zero emissions operations by 2025.
