Accessibility features of our website

Screen readers

Visitors using screen readers and other assistive technology users can navigate key pages of the site by heading structure, being able to access top level elements (<h1>), next level elements (<h2>), third level elements (<h3>).

Form fields

When required, forms on our website will provide a descriptive form field label that will allow users to know what information to enter in a form field. Where a series of form fields relate to similar information, the context of the form fields will be included in the field description.

Application Forms

Our business and personal banking application forms have a time limit for completion.

Graphical design

On every decision taken, we asked ourselves whether it contributed to user-friendliness and accessibility. One of the outcomes was that we decided to increase the contrast between text and background to ensure that text could be read more easily.

Javascript

We applied Javascript to improve usability of the site and make the site more visually attractive. We decided not to use Flash. For all instances where Javascript was applied, alternatives are available so that people without javascript (and readers) are able to access the functionality provided.

Images

All images on the site are accompanied by an alt-text tag that identifies the image or its function.

Videos

All pre-recorded videos hosted in the site, our social media channels or YouTube will have a text alternative.

Known accessibility issues

We are aware of some areas on the website where we could improve accessibility. We are currently working to achieve this. We hope that this website will achieve a minimum of "Level A" conformance to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 by 31 July 2018. We are working closely with Shaw Trust, a national charity helping people live independent and inclusive lives who specialise in providing accessibility consultancy and accreditation.

Please find below more details of the areas of improvement that have been identified, and more details about our work to fix these issues.

  1. Insufficient colour contrast - Partially sighted visitors may have issues distinguish content on our website and within internet banking. We are in the process of building a new website and this issue will be fixed as part of this development which is due for completion later in 2018. If you are having difficulties please contact us.
  2. Links not visible in focus - For visitor using a keyboard to navigate the site there may be some issues with some links (urls) not be being visible. We are in the process of building a new website and this issue will be fixed as part of this development which is due for completion later in 2018. If you are having difficulties please contact us.
  3. Accessing frequently asked questions and downloading documents - Visitors who are using screen readers will not be able view or navigate the FAQs and Downloads section of the website. We are in the process of building a new website and this issue will be fixed as part of this development which is due for completion later in 2018. Screen reader users will need to contact us if they would like help with information on these pages or need to download a document or application form.
