For over two decades, Bristol Wood Recycling Project (BWRP) has been working to redirect waste wood from landfill into affordable timber for the local community to purchase. Its base in central Bristol is filled with everything from scaffolding boards to historic hardwood, as well as a volunteer-led carpentry workshop.
In 2018, the social enterprise’s directors were looking to secure its long-term future by purchasing the operating site. When BWRP first approached Triodos for a loan, they couldn't meet certain criteria which unfortunately meant that traditional borrowing was unfeasible; instead, we were able to introduce them to our Corporate Finance team, who structured a bond to secure their new operating facility.
With the support of around 170 investors, the crowdfunding target was successfully reached in just a fortnight.
Turning ambition into impact
Over the past six years, BWRP has gone from strength to strength, and recently returned to Triodos - this time ready and able to support a longer‑term loan.
Thanks to the project’s operational success and robust financial performance, we were confident in providing this loan to repay all bondholders in full. With every investor now having their money safely returned, BWRP stands as a testament both to the circular economy it champions and to Triodos’ commitment to nurturing sustainable business over the long haul.
"An audacious scheme, to fulfil a bold idea, has drawn to its conclusive end, fulfilling all plans and expectations," explained Ian Coles, Director of BWRP. “Six years sticking to a plan - and fulfilling the stated objective - has demonstrated the tenacity and stamina in the team here justifying the faith of investment in us. It’s been a long and winding road and we’ve got here together!”
Values-based banking
This successful repayment not only marks a milestone for BWRP, but also underscores the trust and partnership that grows when finance is aligned with impact.
“Successful repayment of the bond is testament to BWRP’s dedication and efforts over the past six years. We’re proud of our long-standing relationship with BWRP, and we are thrilled to continue supporting their journey," says Kate Donovan, Relationship Manager at Triodos Bank UK.
This achievement not only highlights BWRP's remarkable resilience but also reinforces Triodos Bank's shared commitment to fostering impactful enterprises.
