What is a B Corp?

Certified B Corporations, or B Corps, are companies verified as meeting standards for social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.

We're proud that Triodos has become one of the first financial services organisations in the world to recertify under the new framework. Here we explain what’s changed, what requirements we’ve had to meet, and what it means for the money you keep with us.

What’s changed about B Corp certification

The old B Corp certification worked on a points system. Companies had to accumulate at least 80 points across different impact areas, which meant strong performance in one area could compensate for weaker performance in another.

The revised standards close that gap.

Companies must now meet minimum requirements across seven impact topics, including:

  • Climate action

  • Human rights

  • Fair work

  • Stakeholder governance

  • Environmental stewardship.

There are also mandatory improvement milestones after three and five years, so certification is no longer a one-off assessment but a commitment to continuous progress.

The process places greater emphasis on independent verification, measurable targets, transparent public reporting and evidence that policies are being implemented in practice. It also reflects the direction of European regulation, including the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (ECGT/EmpCo).

What this means: the bar is higher, the evidence requirements are stricter, and companies have to keep improving.

Why we're one of the first banks to recertify

Triodos has been part of the B Corp movement for a decade. In April 2015, we became the first pan-European bank to achieve B Corp certification, coinciding with the official launch of the movement in Europe.

By participating in the first group assessed against the revised standards, we intend to contribute our experience to the further development of a certification system that holds companies accountable for measurable positive change.

Four UK B Corp businesses your money has helped to support

When you bank with Triodos, your money is helping to support businesses doing good too.

Cafédirect was founded in 1991 by a group of pioneers who’d had enough of farmers getting the short end of the global coffee trade. This year, Cafédirect paid growers 141% of the Living Income Reference Price. Since the start, they’ve put over £31 million back into the communities they buy from.

Riverford started in 1993 with 20 local veg box deliveries to friends and family in Devon, when Guy Watson founded the business on his family farm. In 2018, Riverford’s staff took a 74% stake, moving the company towards employee ownership.

Thrive Renewables generated 134,673 MWh of green electricity in 2025, enough to power tens of thousands of UK homes. One of the UK’s highest-scoring B Corps, their Dunmow Solar Farm in Essex, a 10MW project, is one Triodos helped finance.

House of Hackney is the East London design house behind some of the boldest interiors in Britain, and is also rebuilding one of the rarest habitats on earth. Their 2026 OVERSTORY collection funds the restoration of UK temperate rainforest through their Thousand Year Trust.
