£4 million supported living and day centre for adults with learning difficulties greenlit in North Tyneside

25-01-2016 | A £4 million supported living and day care centre for adults with autism will create more than support opportunities in North Tyneside where there is a severe shortage of learning disability care available.

The service will feature sensory therapy rooms, communal facilities and technology enhanced accommodation to help adults with a learning disability to lead independent lives, learn new skills in a community environment.

Leading the scheme is Kendal House Properties, with provider Lenore Specialist Care delivering service provision.

The project, which is a joint development, found an ethical and sustainable finance partner in Triodos Bank which only loans to organisations which create social, environmental or cultural added value.

Lenore’s service manager, Laura Murray-Walton, said the scheme drives forward the firm’s plan to fill a gap in adult care in the borough.

She said: "I am delighted to announce the start on site of such an exciting development. Lenore is the first care operator in the North East to develop a facility of this type which focuses on providing specialist care to people over the age of 18 who suffer from autism or learning difficulties.

"It has taken us a while to reach this stage as it was important that we got both the design of the buildings and the care services we could offer, just right. Having achieved this, we are able to ensure that once we are operational, we are able to meet the needs of our service users by providing bespoke care packages.

Kendal House Properties will oversee the development and construction of the property, and project leader Lee Maddison invested much of his time up-skilling and understanding all aspects of autism and learning disability care.

Lee said: "It is important to us that we provide a future-proofed facility which will be able to adapt to the individual needs of service users. Whilst the safety of residents and the quality of care is paramount, we also want to make sure the facility is rooted in the community."

The service will be built on Waterville Road, North Shields and it is anticipated that the first phase of construction will be completed in December 2016, welcoming the first residents in early 2017.
