Demonstrating a longstanding commitment to sustainability, it is the fourth time the bank has received the prestigious award for enterprise – attaining the Queen’s Award in 2004, 2010 and 2020, and now the King’s Award in 2025 – and is the only UK bank to have achieved the category accolade this many times.
The King’s Award for Sustainable Development is awarded for commercially successful products, services and management that benefit the environment, society and the economy. In receiving this award, the bank has been recognised for its strong sustainable ethos and unwavering commitment to transparency and demonstrating how banking can be a powerful force for good: serving individuals and communities, as well as building a more sustainable society through its lending. It was praised by judges for having developed its sustainable practice since 2020 and remaining a beacon for others.
Outgoing CEO of Triodos Bank, Dr Bevis Watts, said: “In the month I step down during my 10th year leading Triodos Bank UK, it’s a real honour for the bank to be recognised with the King’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development again. At a time where it feels the world is scaling back on its sustainability commitments, Triodos continues to be a global pioneer in ethical banking and using the power of finance to support projects that benefit people and the planet.”
The award coincides with Triodos Bank launching a new national TV advertising campaign to demonstrate where you bank matters. Bevis adds: “As we launch a new national TV campaign, and in the year we celebrate our 30th anniversary, it is wonderful to be recognised in this way by His Majesty the King. The bank will continue on its mission to make money work for positive change in society, for the here and now, and for future generations.”
The King’s Awards are the UK’s most prestigious business awards, celebrating achievements of UK businesses in a diverse range of sectors and across four categories – Innovation, International Trade, Sustainable Development and Promoting Opportunity through Social Mobility.
Since last winning in 2020, Triodos Bank UK has gone on to deliver even more positive impact through its work; including an award-winning £20.55m loan to Oxygen Conservation – believed to have been the largest conversation-focused commercial debt package in the UK at the time. Triodos Bank is also consistently ranked number one globally for the number of clean energy projects it finances and is now recognised as the UK's No.1 or Best Buy ethical and sustainable bank by Which?, Ethical Consumer and Good with Money as well as the UK's most trusted bank by Fairer Finance.
The bank offers retail banking services, including personal current accounts, savings and investments, as well as lending and corporate finance services to UK organisations. With headquarters in Bristol, it serves over 91,000 customers across the UK and employs over 350 people.
With 197 organisations recognised this year nationally, the awards celebrate the success of exciting and innovative businesses which are leading the way with pioneering products or services, delivering impressive social mobility programmes, or showing their commitment to excellent sustainable development practices. The Award programme, now in its 59th year, allows successful businesses to use the esteemed King’s Awards Emblem for the next five years.
