Triodos Bank shares social investment insights in Yokohama, Japan

Dan Hird, head of corporate finance at Triodos Bank, speaks at this year’s Social Impact Forum about the potential of finance to drive real impact.

21-04-2017 |

This year's Social Impact Forum in Yokohama, Japan brings together thought leaders from around the globe to discuss how social finance can drive innovation in society. Organised by the Yokohama City Council and Meiji University, the forum hopes to facilitate learnings about social impact bonds and how measuring social impact can bring investment into the sector. Taking place on Saturday 22 April 2017, the event will hope to be the seedbed of encouraging social investment to grow in Japan.

Dan Hird, head of corporate finance at Triodos Bank UK, has been invited to share how Triodos has successfully raised £7 million for social causes through seven different social impact bonds (SIBs). Social policy areas that have benefitted from Triodos support include:

  • Homelessness,
  • Vulnerable young people,
  • Children in and at the edge of care, and
  • Type 2 diabetes.

Although Social Impact Bonds are not widely used in the UK - only 32 have been issued to date - they can be of great value to the organisations that need to raise capital for specific social purposes. St Mungos is a homeless charity in London that raised £600,000 in 2013 through a Triodos SIB. The capital was used to run a three year programme commissioned by the Greater London Authority to eliminate rough sleeping in central London. St Mungos both achieved a positive outcome in addressing accommodation, reconnection and education needs, as well as repaying investors in full
