Whilst there’s value in setting goals and self-improvement, we can’t help but wonder how much of the Great Lock In has been born from a pressure to be endlessly productive. If you’re locked in, your head is down - and you’re distracted.
We live in a world which equates value with output. More work, more economic growth, more consumption. This creates a myth that tells us that time is money, and if you’re not being productive, then you’re wasting both.
Have we been locked into believing our worth is defined solely by our productivity? What happens if we resist?
Redefining value
Productivity has become narrowly defined – as what can we achieve more of, faster, bigger, better, and cheaper? Financial institutions have locked capital into extractive industries, because they produce faster returns.
At Triodos, we’d like to imagine what would happen if we direct our energy and funds away from productivity that solely prioritises profit at the cost of people and planet, and towards something more meaningful. Towards community projects, co-operative models, ecological restoration – all things that may offer more, and a different kind of, value over time but take longer to see the return on investment.
By resisting unsustainable growth, we choose to support what is purposeful and regenerative.
The power of unlocking
By being curious, inquisitive and questioning human values and drivers behind 'locking in', we can give ourselves permission to imagine and choose other inputs and choices that impact how we show up personally and professionally. This can create time to connect with what matters to you, such as healthy relationships and community, and a chance to imagine alternative ways of working and living that don’t subscribe to hustle culture or the daily grind. Instead, we might discover ways to intentionally set goals that align with our values, help us to flourish and bring joy.
This time of year is one of transition. It’s a time of seasonal change. For many, it’s a return to work after summer breaks. It’s harvest time and preparing for shorter days here in the northern hemisphere. Autumn symbolises letting go, abundance and balance. Our co-worker, Simon Martin, imparted this wisdom:
"What if at this time of year, we consciously unlock? Unlock space from past patterns, routine, pressures. Unlock with an intention to seek clarity and equanimity - align more with nature’s cycles that can help unlock deeper insights and lead to flourishing people and planet."
Tuning into each unique season and its energy offers so many different opportunities for personal growth, reflection and transformation. By aligning with nature, who knows what we might unlock?
