Historically, smaller challenger banks such as Triodos had no option but to utilise one of the “big four” banks (RBS, Lloyds, HSBC and Barclays) for payment clearing services.
So it is not unusual to see banks of Triodos’ size (or indeed some far bigger organisations) still utilising the “big four” clearing banks.
However, there is currently a real drive by the government, via the Payments Systems Regulator, to promote competition in the banking sector and to encourage innovation in payment systems.
This has resulted in a wider choice of clearing options (including alternative providers and/or direct clearing) now available to challenger banks.
While changing our clearing arrangements would be a very large undertaking we continue to review the options, remaining conscious of maintaining a high quality of service for all our customers.
We don't, but we do have a range of savings options such as ISAs and online/postal savings accounts.
You’ll need your access code to activate your debit card. This can be found in the Triodos Mobile Banking App or Internet Banking.
If you have the Mobile App, start by logging in and then go to 'More, then 'Cards' and select the debit card you wish to activate, then select ‘Activate your card’ and follow the on-screen instructions.
Don't have the Mobile App? Download via the App Store and on Google Play to manage your money on the go, easily and securely. To download the app, you'll need a compatible smartphone or tablet - running Android 6.0 or higher, or Apple iOS 14 or higher.
Alternatively, you can log in to Internet Banking, then select the quick link under ‘Self service’ and ‘Card management’ which will take you to old Internet Banking to view your access code.
Once you have your access code, send a text message to 57887 with the following message: 'TRIODOS PINACT', followed by your access code, followed by the last four digits of your card number - you need a space between sets of numbers. For example: TRIODOS PINACT 123456 1234.
You'll be sent your card PIN via text message within a couple of minutes - don't forget to delete that text message after memorising your PIN.
You're ready to use your card - remember to sign the back.
Please note that some mobile providers do not process text messages to 5-digit numbers. If you text and do not receive a response from us, please call us as your request will not have been confirmed and processed.
If you need any help activating your account, please call our friendly Bristol-based Contact Team - they'll have your everyday banking working for people and planet in no time. You can find our Contact Team opening hours on our support page.
Need to set up your digipass too? Watch our how-to video.
It’s best to cut your card into pieces, making sure to cut through the chip and magnetic strip and put the card in with your normal waste, rather than your recycling. It will still biodegrade more quickly than any other debit card plastic. If possible, don’t put all the pieces of the card in the same bin or with any related documentation such as receipts or statements.
Yes, you can. You may find it helpful to rename your accounts to make identifying and distinguishing them a bit easier. To do this, go into ‘Account settings’, select the account you would like to change the name of, then click on ‘Account name’. Once here you can amend the account name.

Screen scraping happens when you allow a third party to log into your computer while you are using it, so they see what you are doing and can copy the data on the screens you are viewing. This is a way for third parties to be able to get access to your payment data or account overview.
Triodos Bank is not in favour of this practice, as it potentially compromises the integrity of your own computer and your passwords.
As you'd expect from a bank, we take security very seriously - here are some things we do to keep you safe. To help you spot fraud, we’d also like you to know the things we’d never do.
What we do
What we’ll never do
We will never contact you out of the blue to ask you:
If in doubt, call us on the number on our website, or delete the email without opening it.
Learn more about how to stay safe online or visit the action fraud website.
We are part of the Current Account Switch Service so customers can switch current accounts to Triodos Bank from another UK bank or building society quickly and easily.
Yes, cheque books are not issued automatically as we understand that some customers do not require them. If you would like to order one please call our contact team on 0330 355 0355 to request one or send a secure message in Internet Banking.
No, you will need to wait for the funds to clear in order to access the funds.
Setting up a Direct Debit should be done through the company who will be claiming the Direct Debit. You can cancel a Direct Debit in the 'Account Information' tab in old Internet Banking, however you will need to contact the company who claim the Direct Debit to cancel it with them as well.
You will be able to continue using your old account up to and until your switch date, when your funds will be transferred to your new account.
Yes, you can choose and agree a switch date with us. Just make sure you allow seven working days for the switch to take place and that your chosen date isn’t a Saturday, Sunday or Bank Holiday.
We don’t currently offer Apple Pay or Google Wallet (Google Pay or Android Pay).
We are aware of how popular making contactless mobile wallet card payments is with customers. We’re therefore working hard towards delivering this functionality in the future and will notify our customers when it’s available. In the meantime, we ask our customers to carry their debit card with them to make payments. For customers interested in making mobile wallet card payments now with a Triodos debit card, there are other providers you can register your card with to do that, however, please bear in mind fees or charges that the provider may apply and consider what data privacy or security the provider has in place.
Using the Mobile Secure Key is more convenient and means you and your money are better protected from fraud.
During activation, you provide a photo of your ID and a video of your face to verify it is really you - the digital equivalent of an ‘in-person’ identity check at a high street bank.
These are linked to your Mobile Secure Key and the devices you have set it up on, ensuring no one else can set up or use your Mobile Secure Key on their device.
If you have a physical digipass, the Mobile Secure Key will replace it. This means you can send your Triodos Digipass back to us for recycling, using our freepost address – simply write ‘Freepost TRIODOS BANK’ on the envelope (you do not need to attach a stamp). We have partnered with a Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Recycling Scheme and will safely recycle all digipasses.
